Tips for LASIK Recovery: Healing Info
January 2, 2015Laser Vision Correction Center of New Jersey The Common Side Effects of LASIK Surgery
April 17, 2015Do you know someone who has undergone LASIK surgery? Have you heard about the convenience and freedom that LASIK offers to patients? If so, and if you rely on corrective lenses for crisp, clear vision, you have probably wondered if LASIK can offer those same benefits to you. LASIK surgery gently reshapes the cornea to correct a person’s natural vision and eliminate refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Performed on millions of patients each year, LASIK surgery is so popular because it offers effective results and is a good treatment option for a wide range of patients. Here, we discuss the characteristics and qualifications that make our New Jersey patients ideal LASIK candidates.
Is LASIK Right for Me?
LASIK surgery is a fast, painless procedure that can quickly and significantly improve a patient’s vision after just a short recovery period. Because of the numerous benefits that LASIK has to offer, it is common for patients to come to Dr. Kenneth S. Miller asking, “Is LASIK right for me?” In many cases, patients are happy to find that they are ideal LASIK candidates. Below are some of the aspects we will examine to determine if LASIK surgery is a good treatment option for our patients:
- Is the patient at least 18 years of age?
- Does the patient have a vision prescription that has remained stable for at least a year?
- Has the patient suffered an eye injury or infection in the past 12 months?
- Does the patient suffer from any eye diseases?
- Does the patient suffer from any autoimmune disorders or uncontrolled diabetes?
- Does the patient suffer from dry eyes?
- How large is the patient’s pupil?
- How thick is the patient’s cornea?
- Is there any scarring present on the cornea?
In order to get accurate information in regards to the above questions, we will discuss a patient’s health and medical history, thoroughly examine a patient’s eye, and perform a series of diagnostic tests. It is important that a patient has good eye health, a stable vision prescription, and a cornea that is thick enough to safely create the corneal flap that is necessary for surgery. It is very important that all conditions are ideal before proceeding with LASIK surgery because this will help to ensure the safest and most effective surgical results.
LASIK Alternatives
While LASIK surgery is a good treatment option for many patients, not all will find that they are ideal candidates for this procedure. When a patient is not a candidate for LASIK surgery, Dr. Miller will discuss alternate treatment options. Aside from glasses and contact lenses, patients may consider PRK for vision correction. Dr. Miller can discuss these procedures in further detail during a vision consultation.
